"heyward-washington house” was built in 1772. this georgian-style double house was the town home of thomas heyward, jr., one of four south carolina signers of the declaration of independence. george washington rented the home during his charleston stay, in may 1791. the formal gardens features plants commonly used in the south carolina lowcountry in the late 18th century.

Once a sleepy southern town, charleston has a thriving, multicultural downtown. made up of 12 small, eclectic neighborhoods, the peninsula has become a beacon for creative professionals from major cities looking for more laid-back lives. thanks to the influx, charleston has a new energy: over the past five years, restaurants, shops, and boutique hotels have opened at a rapid pace. but how does one make room for the changes while still protecting the city’s unique history and architecture? for a local perspective on the holy city as featured in our march/april 2019 issue, head to the link in our bio. photos by @pfephoto. #traveldeeper
