What do you do when you encounter someone else’s sadness? most of us do one of two things: either we offer inappropriate positivity or distraction (“things will get better soon!” or “let’s go get a drink.”), which, while well intentioned, only invalidates the other’s sadness and gives it more life; or else we feel it with them, finding ourselves overcome with emotion, in which case our own sadness takes up the space we could instead offer to the other person. so how does one get better at holding other people’s sadness? first of all, make solid contact with your own stored emotion. if you have a lot of crying to do, those tears are just waiting for a chance to come out, and they don’t discriminate - they’ll attach themselves to any sadness they encounter, not only your own. if you can’t honor your own sadness, you won’t be able to hold the boundary between your feelings and someone else’s. with that boundary in place, you’ll open up space and patience for someone else. once you can receive another’s emotion, fight the urge to offer advice or force positivity. instead, just let the other person’s sadness do its thing. if you simply hold that boundaried space where the sadness can find expression, you are giving the other person exactly what they need. all negative emotions have jobs, and they all want something from us. unlike anxiety that wants us to take action, or anger that wants us to adjust our boundaries, all sadness wants is a place to live. it just wants out. so give yours some space first, and then you’ll be able to offer similar space to others. our souls aren’t whole unless we feel it all. if you’ve pushed your own sadness away, bring it up! you’ll be better to yourself and others once you do.
