We’re really good at talking down to ourselves. too good, in fact.

we’re our own worse critics. we put ourselves under a microscope every single day and magnify our flaws more than any other person ever could.

but i want to remind you that you don’t always need to be a total d**k to yourself.

maybe you are having an awesome hair day. maybe your b**t looks d**n good in those shorts (you too, guys). maybe your biceps are feeling juicy. maybe your skin is looking flawless.

own it.

many of us are embarrassed to look completely full of ourselves. we feel selfish. cocky. vain. and yet, we have no problem talking down and just being flat out mean to ourselves.

there’s nothing wrong with thinking you look good. especially if you are someone who constantly nitpicks everything about yourself every single day. it doesn’t mean you’re cocky- it means you care about yourself. and that’s very healthy.

you don’t need to walk around like you are the perfect human specimen, but you can walk around with confidence and flaunt what you’ve got. allow yourself to feel good for once.

wear that outfit you love. take that selfie. flex. smile.

just own it. life is tough enough. you don’t need to be so tough on yourself all the time.

besides, confidence looks really good on you.

While the conversations surrounding calories are typically about how to cut calories and eat for weight loss- we can’t forget that sometimes the goal is to actually gain weight.

there are many reasons to want to gain weight. whether you’re trying to bulk up and gain muscle or need to gain weight for medical reasons, you’ll need to up your calories. just like how losing weight requires being in a caloric deficit, gaining weight requires being in a caloric surplus (consuming more than you are burning)

please note that none of these foods actually lead to weight gain on their own- in fact, you can eat any of these foods while dieting and still lose weight! these are simply foods that are higher calorie and lower volume, which allows you to eat more and maximize your calories.

often times, when someone shifts their focus to trying to gain weight after dieting for so long, they find it difficult to eat enough calories. use these ideas to help you!

one of the easiest tips for getting in extra calories is cooking with olive oil (or coconut oil or butter). when we diet, we tend to stick with sprays and alternatives to cut calories. but if you need to get your calories in, don’t shy away from the oil! sauté veggies with a tablespoon or two of olive oil and you’ll add some easy calories.

different brands will have slightly different calorie counts, and the calories of certain peanut butter or dark chocolate bar may be slightly different, but use this guide to give you an idea of some good foods to utilize.

have you gone through (or are currently going through) a phase of gaining weight? what foods do you find add on the calories easily?

😳 real talk coming your way 👊🏼 only continue reading if you’re ready to be challenged.
-
what’s really standing in the way of you making progress? too busy? not motivated enough? can’t seem to stick with it? not seeing results so why even try?
-
maybe you find yourself on an up and down journey that ultimately has lead to frustration and a lack of progress. if this is you, i want to challenge you to, first off, change your mindset. easier said than done? absolutely. but stay with me...
-
are you someone who has been taking “no” for an answer? are you someone who has been hiding behind 1 excuse after the next and accepting your lack of progress as being “ok” just because you have your “reasons?” are you someone who has made some big statements like “i’m serious this time. going to go to commit this time until i reach my goal...” and then you don’t back that statement with any action?
-
if this all sounds familiar, i want to challenge you be a man or woman of your word. i want to challenge you to have the mindset that you’re a winner and that you’re resourceful enough to find a way to succeed. stop taking no for answer and stop looking for excuses to hide behind.
-
now having a solid mindset still isn’t good enough. you have to have a strategy that is effective and sustainable. something that will yield fast results yet something that is sustainable enough that you can stick with it for the rest of your life 💯

cable lateral raises are an excellent exercise to hit your side delts. you can use dumbbells as well but i like using cables when working in higher rep ranges. when performing these, you want to make sure you lead with your elbows and not your wrists. leading with the wrists is the most common mistake people make on these which shifts the emphasis from your side delts to your front delts. our front delts get hit with almost every push exercise. they don’t need the extra help here.
-
further, there is no need to bring the cable too high. you should bring the cable up to the point where your elbows and shoulders are about equal height. going higher is unnecessary and will just temporarily take some tension off of your delts.

Welcome to my gym 😛
one of the biggest benefits to bodyweight training is that your training isn’t tied to a piece of gym equipment. with a grounded area and something to hang from, you can achieve any bodyweight movement 🐒💪🏻

I always recommend eating whatever you like and not restricting yourself, but i’m worried that message sometimes gets misconstrued.

i truly think you should eat whatever it is that you love. whether that’s pizza, donuts, burgers, or cereal, you should allow yourself to enjoy those foods when you want.

but there is a limit.

if we had those foods every single day with no self-control, we’d be incredibly unhealthy.

on the flip side, we shouldn’t be constantly restricting ourselves, either. being able to turn down a donut is great. but if you love donuts and attempt to never eat a donut again for the rest of your life, that’s taking it too far.

there’s a limit.

nutrition always comes down to balance. weight management means balancing calories in vs calories out. controlling cravings means balancing when to indulge and when to control yourself. your overall health is a balance of foods that nourish your body and foods that nourish your soul (donuts don’t nourish my body very much, but they make me d**n happy)

when we talk about nutrition, it’s incredibly important to remember this concept.

we can talk about indulging, but we have to understand that it does not mean always indulging.

we can talk about controlling calories, but have to understand that we don’t always have to do that.

finding that balance isn’t necessarily easy, but it is very, very important.
