This is lacey on driftwood, by the sea, casually watching one unlucky man attempting to clamber back into his capsized kayak.

her new husband wesley, was preparing to dive in if needed -- though thankfully that was not necessary!)

The tufted puffin is one of two species we have on the west coast. they are recognized by the blonde tufts that flow from behind their eyes.

My first glacier 😱 sorry, the geologist in me is gonna geek out for a minute... behind me is the aialik glacier, part of the harding icefield in kenai fjords national park! 🏔 this ancient ice developed ~23,000 years ago during the pleistocene epoch, which was when the majority of alaska was covered by a large ice sheet! ❄️ (swipe to see a pic of me looking pretty darn happy about holding some ancient ice 😁)

icefield, ice sheet - what’s the difference? ice sheets are typically large, like continental-scale large and covering a vast area... greenland and antarctica are the only present-day ice sheets! whereas icefields are smaller and usually connect glaciers to one another; often times, the underlying rock will be visible. the aialik glacier is only one of many glaciers that belong to the harding icefield in alaska.

okay but maybe i should have started with - what is a glacier⁉️ glaciers are large bodies of ice that form when snow accumulates over time and becomes compacted into a huge mass. but what’s even cooler is that glaciers move - they are actively flowing (albeit slowly) like giant rivers of ice! the aialik glacier is more specifically a tidewater glacier, meaning that it terminates in the ocean. tidewater glaciers are responsible for producing icebergs through “calving” (ice breaking off the glacier and into the ocean). swipe through to see a video of some calving i caught on video (pardon the foul language, it was pretty epic 😂)...

The joyland tavern in seward, pa, had a ladies entrance (swipe left), apparently to shield women and children from the "goings on" at the bar (as my grandmother would have said.)

A harbor seal pup from whittier, alaska was admitted to our wildlife response program earlier this week. she was frequently spotted on the beach in whittier over the course of a week before she was picked up. this little pup has intestinal parasites, flipper lacerations, and is malnourished. our team is monitoring her closely and taking every effort to improve her health and make her comfortable. as you can see from this photo she is already making big steps by swimming on her own.

A throwback to this fluffy northern sea otter in resurrection bay, alaska. fun fact: sea otters are the heaviest members of the weasel family....0°c seawater, snowing, but at least that metal dock cleat is a nice pillow? #inotternews #tbt
