I just unloaded more marbled planters from the kiln. i was able to capture how i make these. it’s a super fun process and i love how organic the result is, each one is unique and individual. i will have these with me next weekend at renegade craft fair in seattle. 😁

These are my colorful studded cups. i love seeing them all together! i make these by hand and each stud is individually applied. you can find a process video a few posts back. btw, the texture is amazing to touch.
i have most of these colors available to ship now. 😁🌈

kelly justice (@kellybjustice ): these cups are the result of an exploration of joy!
as a potter, i have always been fascinated with the idea that it is possible to make objects that trigger a feeling of happiness.  i’ve been working with clay for about 12 years, and the themes of the "celebratory object" and the "special occasion" have been driving factors in my studio from the start.
as i was developing this body of multi-patterned work, i listened to a book called “joyful: the surprising power of ordinary things to create extraordinary happiness” by ingrid fetell lee (@aestheticsofjoy ), a designer who spent a decade studying joy. she argues that joy is not just something you can find, but something that you can make. in her research, ingrid identified that there are universally common aesthetics that people everywhere tend to associate with the feeling of joy, or with their memories of joy. she calls these the "aesthetics of joy." interior designers, architects, artists and florists use them to create joyful objects or environments. "joyful" helped me to better understand the psychology behind many of the decisions i had been making in my studio for years, to organize my thoughts and to make more pointed decisions moving forward. a few of the "aesthetics of joy" i explored with this cup series include:
- the use of vibrant, saturated color
- the use of multiples to create a feeling of abundance
- the “celebration aesthetic,” or bursting shapes associated with moments of communal celebration (fireworks, pinwheels, certain flowers)
- a sense of harmony and order through symmetry, radial symmetry, and geometric pattern
thank you ingrid for the inspiration!

This is not only a kind of ceramic production, the production of purple sand p*t is a kind of cultural inheritance of our chinese people! so we are very serious about every piece of work. it's not easy to do every work. it's a cycle. it takes a day at least. i will show the whole process through 30-second video. thank you for your support! ✨✨✨ ✨✨✨

I’m can’t wait to use my new molds, especially the tiny cup mold, but they’re not quite dry yet so i’m pacifying myself by looking at these bright colors and imagining how they’re going to look with the new shapes. 😍😍😍 #slipcast #slipcasting #contemporaryceramics #clayaddict #noticingceramics #ceramiclife #womeninceramics #loveceramic #craftsposure #contemporaryceramics #designermaker #instapottery #functionalpottery #handmadecup #potterslife #contemporaryclay #porcelain #clay #ceramic #indiecraft #pottery #ceramicstudio #claylife #atlantaartist #ceramicist #pottersofinstagram #potterystudio #madeinaskutt #cone6 #studioceramics

I have a love/hate relationship with handles. i love how they shape and define the experience of a good mug, but the process to attach them is tedious. i use a mold made from plaster that took a long time to create. this allows for a consistent size and shape, but i’m not sure if it saves much time since i still need to clean up the handle and attach it. they can still c***k at the attachment if i don’t get a good seal and cover it so it dries slowly. i’m in a constant state of obsessing over my handle shapes and wanting to create new and better ones! 😁

Kelly justice (@kellybjustice ): working with color is hands-down my favorite part of the slipcasting process. this video shows me applying blue porcelain slip to a plaster mold. most of the color in my ceramic work comes directly from the clay itself. i use a cone 6 porcelain casting slip from @lagunaclay, and add mason stains in a variety of colors.
for me, colored casting slip and textured plaster are a magical combination. first, i brush the entire mold surface in one color. the porous plaster absorbs the water from the clay quickly. after a minute or two, i wipe the mold with a damp sponge. the colored clay remains in the recessed areas of the texture. from there, i can layer different colors to achieve more complex patterns or effects. it so satisfying to watch the crisp patterns emerge as i wipe the excess clay away from the plaster.
