Longmen grottoes, a historical place in luoyang, china

located between mount xiang and mount longmen and facing yi river, in henan province, china, longmen grottoes or longmen caves 龍門石窟 are regarded as one of the three most famous treasure houses of stone inscriptions in china. lots of historical materials concerning art, music, religion, calligraphy, medicine, costume and architecture are kept here.

situated in a scenic natural environment, the longmen grottoes ('dragon's gate grottoes') comprise more than 2,300 caves and niches carved into the steep limestone cliffs over a 1km (0.62 mi) long stretch, and housing more than 100,000 images and statues of buddha and his disciples.

the alternative name of "dragon's gate grottoes" derives from the resemblance of the two hills that check the flow of the yi river to the typical "chinese gate towers" that once marked the entrance to luoyang from the south.

created over the course of approximately five centuries beginning in 493 ce, these grottoes, along with the statues and inscriptions carved within, provide a window into the political, cultural, and artistic circumstances of the late northern wei and tang periods.

in 2000 the site was inscribed upon the unesco world heritage list as “an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity,” for its perfection of an art form, and for its encapsulation of the cultural sophistication of tang dynasty china.
